Q1. What is a pressure balanced top entry lubricated plug valve used for, and where is it used?
A1. A plug valve isolates flow with a tapered or cylindrical plug turned a quarter turn in the body. It is used on the same duties as a ball valve but particularly where the medium is dirty, viscous or liable to leave a deposit, because the plug wipes its own seat as it turns and there is no cavity for solids to settle in. Typical applications are gas distribution and metering, oil-field gathering, water injection and produced-water lines, slurries, heavy oils and some chemical service. The lubricated type uses a sealant film that is renewed through a grease fitting and is chosen where a tight seal is needed on gas; the sleeved type encloses the plug in a fluoropolymer sleeve and needs no routine lubrication, which suits lines where maintenance access is poor.
Q2. What should I watch during installation, operation and maintenance?
A2. A plug valve is a quarter-turn device and should be worked fully open or fully closed; a partly open plug exposes the port edges to the flow and erodes them. On lubricated valves the routine that keeps them alive is regular greasing — through the sealant fitting, with the valve in the position that puts the groove against the sealant hole, and with enough grease to lift the plug slightly off the seat. On sleeved valves do not force a stiff plug: increased torque usually means the sleeve needs replacing, and forcing it destroys both the sleeve and the plug taper.
Q3. Which standards is this valve designed and tested to?
A3. These valves are built to published standards rather than to a catalogue number. The pressure and temperature framework normally follows ASME B16.34; ASME B16.10 covers face-to-face dimensions and ASME B16.5 the flange drilling. The design reference follows the type: API 600 for bolted-bonnet steel gate, globe and check valves in the larger sizes, API 602 for the compact forged versions, API 608 for ball valves, API 609 for butterfly valves, and API 6D where the valve is intended for pipeline service. Pressure testing follows API 598. The certificate of conformity issued with a delivery states which standard and which revision each item was built and tested to, so the drawing should be read together with that certificate.
Q4. How is the valve pressure tested before delivery?
A4. Two practical points are worth fixing before the order is placed: whether the seat test is carried out in both directions or only in the specified flow direction, and whether a test certificate with the recorded figures is required or a simple pass statement will do. On isolation valves for gas and hazardous media the recorded figures are normally asked for and filed with the maintenance record, because they are the baseline against which later leakage is judged.
Q5. How does it compare with the alternative valve types on the same line?
A5. Choose by duty first and by price second. Isolation over long periods with low loss points at a gate or a ball valve; frequent on–off points at a ball valve; flow regulation points at a globe or a control valve; tight shut-off on gas at a soft-seated ball; and space-constrained large lines point at a butterfly. The cost comparison only becomes meaningful once the duty is fixed, because the cheapest valve of the wrong type is the expensive one.
Q6. How do I select the right one for my line?
A6. State the standard you want the valve built to, and the revision, rather than assuming one. A valve can be built to ASME, DIN, EN, GB or a client specification, and the choice changes face-to-face dimensions, flange drilling, the material list and the test acceptance at the same time — so it cannot be settled after the order. Where no standard is named, say which dimension is critical on your line: the face-to-face length where space is tight, or the flange drilling where the valve must bolt up to an existing flange.
Q7. How do I order, and what information is needed for a quotation?
A7. Ordering starts from the line list: tag number, size, class, medium, temperature, connection and operating method. Send that and we will confirm material and seat selection against the medium, flag anything that is likely to cause trouble on site, and quote accordingly. Special sizes, operators and materials are produced to order.
